Society, space and environment

The Society, Space and Environment (SSE) research and enterprise group brings together academics and PhD students working on key social, political and environmental concerns that constitute twenty first century lives. The group shares a distinctly geographical approach that highlights the role of space, place and materiality in producing inequalities and in configuring social and environmental change. A core aim is to develop new and meaningful ways of thinking and working collaboratively to effect more just futures.

Our research in society, space and environment comprises a range of human and non-human geographies and our approach is built upon principles of research excellence characterised by collaboration and co-production.

Power and place

This theme draws on political, social and cultural geographies to focus on how current geographical engagements with space and place can contribute to a greater understanding of the workings of power.

Research includes critical approaches to spaces of inequality and difference, sites of commemoration and memorialisation, the relationship between landscape, embodiment and subjectivity, and spaces of authority, activism and protest.

Research is undertaken across a range of contexts where the modalities of landscapes, cities, political collectives and bodies take shape, and includes collaborative and transformative work on LGBT lives, racism, security and citizenship, authority and practices of ‘commoning’, and D/disability and arts practice.

Political ecology and sustainable development

This theme comprises researchers interested in developing better understandings of social justice in environmental contexts through a critical engagement with current agendas around resource access, sustainable development and socio-ecological resilience. Across various substantive contexts, our work focuses on embodied politics and practices of access, property rights and citizenship, and involves the development of innovative collaborative research practices.

Current research focuses on meanings, practices and authority in relation to access to land and water for recreation and livelihoods in the UK and Southeast Asia, and includes work on governance and regulation of leisure spaces, socio-natural dynamics of urban and coastal regeneration, and feminist political ecologies of deforestation, migration and oil palm investment.
