Academic Services

Martyn Annis

Martyn leads Academic Services, the department responsible for providing central support for the university's academic administration. Academic Services is organised into five main divisions, incorporating a number of teams and reflecting its wide range of activities. This includes recruitment and outreach work, student admissions, student administration and systems and support for the management of the quality, standards and enhancement of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. In addition, Martyn is responsible for overseeing teaching timetabling, International Office and Doctoral College administration.

Accommodation and Hospitality Services

Julie Barker

Julie’s department is responsible for leading four main areas – accommodation, Southcoast Conferences, hospitality and community liaison. The accommodation team manages the university halls of residence and provides housing advice to all students. Southcoast Conferences hires out the university's residential accommodation and function rooms when they are not being used for academic purposes and it manages the Varley Park conference centre. Hospitality services provides catering across all campuses for students and staff, and for meetings, functions and events. Finally, the community liaison team acts as a bridge between our student population and the local community.

Estates and Facilities Management

Mike Clark

Estates and Facilities Management, lead by Mike, is responsible for the physical environment in which staff and students work, live and learn. Mike's team works to provide excellent facilities for the university community as a whole, and to contribute to ensuring an enriching student experience through fit for purpose, high-quality buildings and support services.

Finance

Mike Bewlock

As Director of Finance, Mike supports the university in planning, managing and maximising the value and use of its financial resources in order to achieve its objectives in a sustainable, controlled and accountable way. The five divisions of the department provide the following financial support services for the university: incomes and payments; payroll and pensions; procurement services; accounting information services; and financial planning.

Human Resources and Development

Jo Hird

As Head of Human Resources, Jo Hird is responsible for the delivery of the operational Human Resources agenda and the day to day management of the operational aspects of the department. She leads three main areas: Employee Relations, Leadership and Management Development and HR Operations.

Information Services

Quentin North

Quentin leads Information Services, the department which provides facilities and resources to support learning, teaching, research and administration. This includes the university’s IT network, its five libraries, the student digital learning environment, open access computers, digital information resources, media centres, print and binding services as well as support, advice and training on the use of information and equipment.

Internal Audit

Barry Frankham

Barry’s department is responsible for carrying out independent appraisals of all the institution’s activities, both financial and otherwise. It provides an independent assurance of the university’s internal control framework to the Governing Body and the Vice-Chancellor.

The team also have an active role in risk management, fraud and irregularity investigations, value for money and advice and guidance on systems and processes throughout the Institution.

Marketing and Communications

Elizabeth Sanz

As Director of Marketing and Communications, Elizabeth is responsible for the development and implementation of a range of marketing, communications and brand strategies. The department comprises a number of specialist teams working across all forms of marketing (in areas including student recruitment, research, and enterprise), internal communications, design, brand management, user experience design, market research, digital communications, social media, film and photography, news media, PR and public affairs. Marketing and Communications also provides organisational support for corporate events, conferences and award ceremonies.

Occupational Safety and Health Services

Alan Cowen

Alan’s department is responsible for the university’s overarching health and safety strategy. The team prepares and issues safety policies and codes of practice, it audits safety, undertakes accident investigation and reporting, and promotes best working practices in order to reduce ill health across the university. The team liaises with external organisations on matters of health and safety, provides and maintains fire-fighting equipment, responds to incidents and provides safety training courses.

Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement

Sam Davies

As Director of the Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement department, Sam’s team is responsible for initiating and developing relationships with former students as well as the generation of philanthropic income from a range of external sources to help support the university’s current priorities and future ambitions.

Research, Enterprise, and Social Partnerships

Sue Baxter

Sue’s department supports academics to maximise the income and impact of their research, consultancy and enterprise activities. It includes Knowledge Exchange Managers, the Enterprise Team,  the IP and Contracts team, the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) Centre, the Research office, the Green Growth Platform, Community University Partnership Programme (CUPP), the Sussex Learning Network and Community 21.

Sport and Recreation Service

Sarah Hogg

As Director of the Sport and Recreation Service, Sarah works with the Students' Union, under the Sport Brighton banner, to meet the sport, exercise and recreation needs of students and staff. The department’s work can be divided into two areas: sport development, providing sporting and health related activity and opportunity; and managing and developing facilities. Working with local, regional and national sports organisations, the service aims to secure a regional sporting role for the university.

Strategic Planning and Projects

Liz Allen

As Director of Strategic Planning and Projects, Liz and her department help to shape the university's corporate plans and other strategies, particularly in respect of student numbers and the size and shape of the academic profile. The department is responsible for planning, performance and data, preparing strategic responses on behalf of the university which aim to address national and local initiatives, it monitors the delivery of those strategies and reports on their progress, and contributes to a range of university policies.

Student Services

Karen Jackson

Student Services, lead by Karen, encompasses a wide range of services within the university, aimed at supporting students' learning experience and personal development.

The department provides a range of professional services available to all students on a variety of issues, including: careers; chaplaincy; counselling and wellbeing; disability and dyslexia; medical services; nurseries; and the Student Advice Service. By working with students and offering a comprehensive range of specialist information, advice, assistance and support, the department is able to help ensure that students get the most out of their time at the university.
