Falmer campus – a new home for sport and health sciences

We’re making changes to our university estate, so we can provide the best environments for our students to live, learn and socialise in, and support our net zero carbon ambitions.

At Falmer, we’ll be making changes to our Watson and Checkland buildings, as well as our sports hall. We'll also be refurbishing our newly acquired sports and fitness centre. These changes are helping get the campus ready for our School of Sport and Health Sciences which will be based on the campus from autumn 2024.

Education, teaching, nursing, diagnostic radiography, medical and paramedic science students are already on the Falmer campus, and they'll be joined by further health sciences students – midwifery, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and podiatry – and our sport and exercise students, creating a focused and creative community where you'll be surrounded by likeminded people who you'll learn with and from.

When the work is complete the School of Sport and Health Sciences will share the campus with the School of Education and Brighton and Sussex Medical School who are already based at Falmer.

  • Our new sports and fitness facility will be renovated and upgraded and is expected to include:
    • dedicated areas for paramedics, and strength and conditioning
    • physiotherapy rehabilitation gym space
    • podiatry clinic
    • a large cafe space at the heart of the building
    • facilities including tennis, badminton and squash courts, dance and spin studios, and an indoor swimming pool.
  • The current Sports Centre is being reconfigured to house our sports and exercise science labs. The existing sports hall, changing areas and seminar room will all be retained
  • Watson Building will provide a virtual anatomy lab, flexible skills, simulation and teaching rooms for physiotherapy, occupational therapy, podiatry and midwifery.
  • Westlain House will house clinical skills, radiography and further simulation suites.
  • You’ll also spend time in the teaching rooms of the Checkland Building, which is home to our extensive teaching resource collection

The planning process for our estate improvements is ongoing and as such aspects of our plans are subject to change.

Make sure you read our email updates and check back on this page regularly to see the latest news.
