Falmer campus – a new home for sport and health sciences

We’re making changes to our university estate, so we can provide the best environments for our students to live, learn and socialise in, and support our net zero carbon ambitions.

At Falmer, we are making changes to our Watson and Checkland buildings, as well as our sports hall. We're also refurbishing our newly acquired sports and fitness centre. These changes are helping get the campus ready for our School of Sport and Health Sciences which will be based on the campus from autumn 2024.

Education, teaching, nursing, diagnostic radiography, medical and paramedic science students are already on the Falmer campus. They'll be joined by further health sciences students – midwifery, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and podiatry – and our sport and exercise, and PE teacher training students, creating a focused and creative community where you'll be surrounded by like-minded people who you'll learn with and from.

When the work is complete the School of Sport and Health Sciences will share the campus with the School of Education and Brighton and Sussex Medical School who are already based at Falmer.

What facilities will it have?

The Falmer campus is being redesigned, renovated and upgraded with many additional specialist facilities for our sport and health science students.

The Falmer campus has lots of places to eat including a restaurant, cafe and a Students' Union cafe and bar – there will also be a new large cafe space at the heart of the new building. Plus the campus has halls accommodation, a student advice centre and extensive sport and leisure facilities.

The planning process for our estate improvements is ongoing. This means that aspects of our plans are subject to change.

Make sure you read our email updates and check back on this page regularly to see the latest news and developments.
