Responding to child to parent violence: Final project conference

This two-day end-of-project conference showcased project results and launched the RCPV toolkit developed by the project partners. It was hosted at the University of Brighton on 28 and 29 January 2015 and organised by Dr Paula Wilcox (Principal Investigator for the RCPV project), Michelle Pooley (England Co-ordinator for the RCPV project) and Claire Thompson (Project Manager).

Overview

The project

Responding to Child to Parent Violence was a multi-agency research project led by the University of Brighton. The project team consisted of organisations in the UK, Bulgaria, Ireland, Spain and Sweden, brought together to study the emerging problem of abuse perpetrated by children on their parents and carers.

The work was part-funded by the European Union's Daphne III programme, which supports Europe-wide projects that address issues of violence against children, young people and women and aims to attain a high level of health protection, wellbeing and social cohesion. The project took place between 2013 and 2015.

The conference

This conference used a mixture of keynote presentations, workshops and panel discussions to explore the following conference themes:

Conference themes

  • Restorative approaches, safeguarding and risk in CPV work
  • Developing mutually respectful relationships
  • Challenging power, control and discrimination in CPV
  • Awareness-raising and preventative approaches

The event was an opportunity to present findings and resources and to explore experiences and responses to CPV within the different partner countries.

Child to parent violence: "...any harmful act by a teenage child intended to gain power and control over a parent. The abuse can be physical, psychological, or financial,"
