Disability and dyslexia

A disability is defined as any long-term condition (that lasts or is expected to last for more than 12 months) that has a significant adverse effect on your ability to study. It can include conditions such as:

  • Specific learning differences (such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia)
  • Mental health conditions
  • Neurodiversity (such as autism, ADHD)
  • Physical disabilities (including mobility and sensory impairments)
  • Long term health conditions (such as epilepsy, cancer, HIV, etc.)
  • Any combination of the above.

The Disability and Dyslexia team support students with a wide range of disabilities to help them to succeed on their course:

Support we offer at the university

Learning support plans:

University-specific adjustments to the way in which we teach and assess your course and also in how we provide you with access to other university facilities that support the student experience.

Funded support:

Most commonly provided through Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA), which can include:

  • specialist IT or other equipment
  • One-to-one staffing such as study skills tuition
  • Mentoring
  • BSL interpreting or physical support
  • and help with other costs arising from your disability including travel.

Thank you so much, I am so grateful for all your help. The fact that I can now use a recording device in campus lectures is such a relief. Thank you for creating me a Learning Support Plan and for all your advice it’s made a huge impact on my learning.

Telling us about a disability

We are proud of our diverse student population and more than 20% of our students have told us they have a disability. You can tell us about a disability as part of your UCAS application or at any point during your course.
