  • For most students the decision deadline on which offers to accept is Thursday 9 June 2022.
  • A-level results day is Thursday 18 August 2022, with GSCE results being published on Thursday 25 August 2022.

The government has signalled that 2022 will be a ‘transition year’ following two years of disruption and exam cancellation caused by COVID-19.

  • Grade boundaries will be set mid-way between 2019 and 2021 levels, meaning fewer students can expect to get top grades.

  • Support and reference materials will also be made available during some exams.
  • Contingency plans are in place if examinations are cancelled for a third year.

We are looking forward to holding these events on our campuses in Brighton and Eastbourne. Share your contact details with us now and we’ll let you know when booking opens.

+–Can I visit the campus?

Yes you can. We are delighted to be able to welcome students and visitors on to campus.

This term most courses are running applicant days for students holding offers. These events take place on each of our campuses in Brighton and Eastbourne. You can also opt to attend an online applicant event. You can book your place now.

Applicant events will provide you with opportunities to hear from staff and students from your course, give you a chance to find out about student life, explore your accommodation options and get expert advice on student finance and support services.

You can also explore online 24/7 and take virtual tours of accommodation, learning facilities and our campuses.

2. Applying and entry requirements

+–How do I apply to the University of Brighton?

If you are applying for an undergraduate degree then you should apply through UCAS. If you are applying for a PGCE then you should apply through the Department for Education's Apply service.

For our postgraduate courses – MA, MSc, MRes or PhD you should apply direct to the university.

Find out more with our advice on how to apply.

+–Application to my course involves an interview, how will this work?

Most of our interviews are being held online. We will provide you with you full details on what to expect after you have applied. The format the interview takes will vary depending on the requirements of the course. Use our course finder to confirm individual interview requirements. Attending an online drop-in advice event can help you prepare for interview.

+–How will you review my portfolio?

Where the application process involves a portfolio, we will be asking for a digital portfolio, there will be no requirement for you to provide a physical portfolio of work. What you are asked to provide will vary depending on the course and you will be given full details on formats, and what we are looking for once you have applied.

+–I am concerned that my grades will be affected by disruption to my studies, will you take this into account?

Yes, we welcome the contingency plans and changes to exams announced for students applying for 2022.

However, we recognise that even with these measures in place, the disruption on individual performance in exams and assessments will vary greatly, with some students more negatively affected by their experience of the past two years than others.

At Brighton we are committed to doing all we can to support our students and applicants and to ensure that the impact of COVID-19 on your progression to university is minimised. Our approach is guided by:

  • appreciation of the complex range of factors – at regional, school and individual level – that could impact on students achieving the qualifications and grades they need to progress to higher education
  • the particular challenges students from disadvantaged backgrounds are experiencing as a result of the pandemic
  • how we can balance the challenges students face this year with the mandatory requirements of the professional bodies which accredit some of our courses, like nursing and teaching.

+–Will you be reducing your entry requirements?

No. Entry requirements for most of our courses sit within a range, so there is no need for us to make significant changes to our published entry requirements in response to the disruption many students have experienced over the last 2 years. We also make personalised offers, operate a flexible admissions policy and use the UCAS tariff to assess all kinds of achievement.

+–Will you make me an unconditional offer?

Yes, if you have completed your qualifications and already have your grades. At Brighton we make unconditional offers to students who already hold their qualifications. We do not change conditional offers to unconditional until we have students’ confirmed grades.

+–Can I apply now and change my mind about the year I start?

If you have applied and decide to defer your place, please get in touch as soon as possible to confirm that you can do this. In most cases it should be possible to hold the place open for you until 2023. Letting us know in good time that you have changed you mind will also enable us to offer the place to another student.

If you change your mind about deferring and want to start in 2022 we will also do everything we can to be flexible and make this change for you. The sooner you get in touch the more chance there will be we can make this happen.

+–Can I apply now for 2023 or do I have to wait?

Yes, you can apply now for 2023, you just need to indicate on your application that you wish to defer your place. We will keep in touch and will contact you well before you are due to start the course with advice and reminders on applying for accommodation and student finance.

3. Accepting your offer

+–I have an offer from the University of Brighton, when do I need to accept it?

For most students the UCAS decision deadline is Thursday 9 June 2022.

We accept postgraduate applications throughout the year. Most courses start in October however some do offer the option of a January or February start.

You need to accept your offer before you can start your accommodation application.

+–What happens on results day?

Results day for A-levels and equivalent qualifications will be on Thursday 18 August 2022, with GSCE results being published on Thursday 25 August 2022. Results day for Scottish Highers is Tuesday 9 August 2022. The Wales and Northern Ireland results dates are yet to be confirmed. Grades will be shared with us in the usual way by UCAS.

+–Courses with occupational health and DBS clearance and other mandatory requirements.

Some of our professionally accredited courses have additional entry criteria relating to, for example, occupational health and DBS clearance – please check course pages for details.

+–How should I contact you if I have questions about my application?

Our enquiries team can advise you on all aspects of studying here. You can reach the team on live chat, through our website and by phone during office hours.

After you apply we will communicate with you through our applicant portal, so make sure you activate your account with us. We’ll tell you how to do this after you have applied.

4. Learning and teaching on campus

+–How will my course be taught?

For 2022-2023 all students to be taught through scheduled, on-campus, face-to-face teaching, enhanced by some online learning. Every student has on-campus learning with activities including tutorials, workshops, laboratory classes and studio sessions all taking place face to face. Students are also taking part in off-campus practice-based learning activities such as placements, field trips and study visits.

All of our campus facilities – libraries, learning spaces, restaurants, gyms and more are open.

Like all universities we are following government guidance and we continue to monitor the pandemic very closely. Should Public Health advise it we have robust plans for additional safety measures to be introduced to maintain on-campus learning and for students to continue their studies remotely as a last resort.

+–When does my course start?

The 2022 academic year begins on Monday 26 September 2022, with teaching for most courses starting the following week.

Many of our education courses, some health courses including Medicine, and some postgraduate business courses have an earlier start date.

It is important that you check the start date for your course. This is provided on your offer letter – a copy can be downloaded from Student View.

Welcome week timetables are confirmed shortly before the start of term. Bear in mind your teaching timetable could be subject to some change, particularly in the first few weeks of the term.

5. Accommodation and student finance

+–When can I apply for university accommodation?

Applications for university accommodation open in late March and the deadline is usually the end of June. You need to make Brighton your firm choice before you can apply. We’ll let you know when applications open.

+–Do you guarantee students a room in halls?

Yes we do. We guarantee all eligible students an offer of a room in one of our halls of residence. If your course is based in Eastbourne you can also apply for accommodation if we are your insurance choice.

To be eligible for our guaranteed you must:

  • apply for university accommodation by the deadline we tell you about.

When you apply we will ask to you identify up to four preferences. We aim to offer everyone one of their top two preferences but can’t guarantee this.

We recommend considering proximity to your study campus when you are noting your accommodation preferences.

+–Do you have halls on campus?

Each of our teaching campuses has halls on or adjacent to site. In Brighton we also have a dedicated residential site at Varley Park. We opened new halls, offering 800 new student beds, on our largest campus in Moulsecoomb, Brighton in autumn 2021.

+–Can I visit you before I apply for halls?

+–When can I apply for student finance?

Student finance applications open in February 2022.

You can see details of the scholarships, bursaries and other financial support we provide here.
