Context matters

You can be confident we treat every applicant fairly, and if you join us at Brighton it will be on merit.

Achieving a good set of grades is a key part of earning a place at university. At Brighton we recognise that grades are not always a full indicator of potential and for some students achieving higher grades can be more challenging because of circumstances outside of their control.

We use our Contextual Admissions Policy to take certain factors into account when we look at your application and these factors may mean we make you a reduced grade, contextual offer.

We will never use anything you disclose in a negative way, when you complete your UCAS application, please do so as fully as possible and encourage your referee do the same.

• We welcome a range of qualifications
  These include A-levels, International Baccalaureates, BTECs and Access courses – we use the UCAS tariff to assess all kinds of achievement – academic and vocational. We will also welcome the new T-level qualification for courses that are good matches for the T-level curriculum studied.
• We consider every application individually
  Our students are people who bring a huge range of different experiences, talents and strengths to our community, so make sure you use your personal statement to show us everything you have to offer.
• We want to get to know you
  For some courses this might be through a portfolio or an interview, this gives us more opportunities to get to know more about you, your values and what motivates and inspires you. We can provide advice and support about what to expect at interview and in helping you prepare your portfolio too.
• You can tailor your degree to best fit your aspirations
  Study with us and you will have opportunities to select optional modules and field trips, placement or volunteering opportunities. For some courses the options you choose can enable you to formally specialise and have this acknowledged in the degree title you are awarded.
• We understand different life challenges
  We are doing all we can to minimise the ongoing impact of the pandemic and the cost of living on your journey to university and your chosen career. We appreciate all kinds of factors – regional, school and individual – could impact on you realising your potential and achieving the qualifications and grades you need to progress to university. Entry requirements for most of our courses sit within a range. As well as operating a contextual admissions policy for eligible applicants, we can we make personalised offers and use the UCAS tariff to assess and recognise achievements. Most courses can and do accept students who do not achieve the published entry requirements.
