What are the A level requirements to study engineering?

To study engineering you’ll generally need A-levels in maths and a physical science. The grades you'll need will depend on the level of degree you join — whether it is a BEng award or a masters level MEng, and the type of engineering you wish to study.

Other relevant qualifications if you want to study engineering

At Brighton we offer integrated foundation year courses for all our engineering degrees. A foundation year offers you an extra year to build your knowledge, skills, and confidence, to prepare you to study at degree level.

Other relevant qualifications include BTEC, International Baccalaureate or an Access to HE Diploma, there are also T-levels which have been introduced recently.

From theory to practice: Expert advice for future engineering students

Improving your practical skills is a great way to prepare to study engineering at university.

Dr Derek Covill is course leader for our design engineering courses and teaches in a range of areas such as mechanics of materials, mechanical design, computer-aided design/engineering, and digital fabrication.

I am a big fan of practical learning, where theory is complemented with practical activities. When teaching mechanics of materials, students get hands on in our materials testing lab using the theory covered in class.

How do I prepare to study engineering at uni?

There are a few things you might do alongside your current studies to help you get ready to study engineering at university:

  • strengthen your maths and science skills
  • get involved in engineering projects
  • explore engineering software
  • attend engineering workshops or summer school
  • read and research
  • improve your problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Strengthen your maths and science skills

Aiming for excellence in subjects like maths and physics is essential. A-Level students could consider taking further maths to broaden their technical skills.

Get involved in engineering projects

Join a robotics club, participate in a science fair, or get involved in community engineering projects to deepen your understanding and make your university application stand out. Look into STEM clubs and the Engineering Development Trust for opportunities.

Explore engineering software

Familiarise yourself with software like SolidWorks and simulation tools like MATLAB and Ansys Fluent — an excellent computational fluid dynamics software, great for employability. Many of these offer free versions for students, providing an early advantage in your studies and future career.

Attend engineering workshops or summer schools

Summer schools and workshops focused on engineering provide a great introduction to the field and help you meet like-minded peers and professionals. These experiences help you learn a long list of engineering skills as you are preparing to study engineering at university.

Read and research

Stay informed about the latest engineering trends and breakthroughs by reading publications like IEEE Spectrum or Engaged. This habit will not only build your knowledge but also fuel your passion for engineering and help you solve engineering problems. Here at Brighton students get access to all major Elsevier research journals, which are the highest level of publication.

Engineering is as much about problem-solving and critical thinking as it is about technical knowledge. Engage in puzzle-solving competitions, logic games, or maths Olympiads to sharpen these skills, crucial for tackling engineering problems.

Choosing the right engineering discipline

When you’re choosing your engineering discipline reflect on what problems you're enthusiastic about solving in a related field and talk to your lecturers or careers advisors at your school or college.
