Sound and music degrees

At Brighton we take an innovative and practice-based approach informed by contemporary practice in sound and music where technologies are continually evolving.

Art and design courses at Brighton are ranked joint 8th in the UK and in the top 100 globally by the QS World University Rankings® 2022

You will focus on exploration of sound for the moving image, sound art and sound and new media through experimentation finding your individual path within the subject.

We have modules designed to prepare us with the skills for success in the real world. We’re currently working on a Film Music module, in which we are encouraged to treat each task as if it was for a real film company or director. The head tutor on this module has worked a lot in film and shares his experiences and knowledge.

Specialist equipment and facilities

You will be able to use facilities that include three surround sound studios, a two-channel sound studio, two sound-proofed recording booths synced to sound studios, a dedicated Mac computer suite, electronic mash-up workshop area, multi-channel A-V sound diffusion lab field recording equipment and specialist software.

Vocational and creative

The course is excellent preparation for careers in musical composition, sound design production for film, TV and video, the games industry, radio, theatre and performing arts, interactive and new media as well as sound arts for galleries and public spaces.

Showcase your work

You’ll have many opportunities to perform work throughout your course at Brighton venues, as well as at the university and in the annual Graduate Show. Our graduates regularly gain recognition in their field and recent achievements include an Ivor Novello nomination for Olivia Louvel, digital musician who studied on the BA and MA.
