Opening the door to careers

Youngsters wanting careers in science, engineering or the environment are being invited to open evenings organised by a new Sussex college, co-sponsored by the University of Brighton.

3 October 2014

The events, in Brighton, Eastbourne and Newhaven, are being run by University Technical College (UTC), a college offering academic and technical education for 14 to 18 year olds.

The college, being built at Railway Quay, Newhaven, currently is receiving applications and will welcome its first students next September.

UTC, also sponsored by the educational charity the Aldridge Foundation, Lewes District Council, and Veolia Environmental Services plc, will focus on science, engineering, technology, maths and computing, specialist skills which are in demand by the growing marine engineering and environmental technology sectors.

UTC's Principal Designate Jonathan Clarke said, "UTC@harbourside will appeal to students with ambition and who enjoy finding out how things work, who care about the environment, who like to use maths and science to solve real-life problems and who want to make a difference to the world in which we live.

"We'll be working with employers to create interesting projects and help our students develop the skills they need to pursue fulfilling careers in any field. The open evenings are a chance for young people and their parents to find out about the exciting opportunities UTC@harbourside has to offer."

Open evenings

Students currently in Year 9 or 11 and their parents will be able to find out more and meet Jonathan Clarke at the events, two of which will be held at university campuses:
