From 2006-2014, the Pathways of Women’s Empowerment research and communications collective pursued activist and policy-oriented research, bringing together more than 60 researchers from contexts as diverse as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brazil, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria, Palestine and Sierra Leone, to work on questions of sexuality and pleasure, women’s access to political office and influence, and on the role that paid work and independent income plays in giving women more control over their lives. This talk shares some of the lessons from Pathways, both about what works to support women’s empowerment and what we learnt about working together across borders and disciplinary boundaries.

Andrea Cornwall is the Head of the School of Global Studies and Professor of Anthropology and Development at the University of Sussex. Former director of the Pathways of Women’s Empowerment research and communications collective, an international interdisciplinary activist research network on women’s rights, she works on gender and sexuality, and on citizen engagement.
