Brighton professor supports genome app launch

Colin Smith, Professor of Functional Genomics at the University of Brighton, has given his personal backing to a new free-to-use app which provides an introduction to personal genomics.

12 April 2018

Professor Smith, the first person in the UK to donate his personal genome sequence under open consent, is acting as an ambassador for the Personal Genome Project UK’s new GenoME app.

The new app, which can be downloaded from the Apple Store, enables users to explore personal genomics and the work of the Personal Genome Project UK. The Project, which is based at University College London, is dedicated to creating publicly shared UK genome, health, and trait data to aid research and scientific progress.

Speaking about the launch of the GenoME app, Professor Smith said: “Genome data is essential in driving forward continuing innovation in healthcare and personalised medicine. As a scientist working in the field I couldn’t resist the opportunity to have my whole genome sequenced back in 2013. It has been fascinating to work with the PGP-UK team and I was delighted to be asked to act as ambassador for the GenoME app.”

Professor Smith will be delivering his inaugural lecture - A journey of discovery: from genes to genomes through antibiotics, sleep, vitamins and personal genomics - at the University of Brighton on Wednesday 2 May 2018.

The event is free to attend and you can book tickets now.
