University of Brighton funds clean water in India

The University of Brighton has supported the construction of a sustainable source of clean drinking water for the Bachepalle community in Andhra Pradesh, India.

2 November 2018

Through sales of Life Water from catering facilities across all of its campuses, the university has raised funds to provide clean water to 1,865 people who have hitherto faced challenges accessing such a resource. The new water source is a bore-well.

The university has been in partnership with Life Water, an ethical water company that funds the development of clean water projects worldwide, since 2014. The organisation has a partner charity, Drop4Drop, which works to deliver clean water across the world.

The Bachepalle community has a population of over 1,800 people who, up to now, have had to rely on a single water tank which has been filled weekly by the Indian government. The tank is often empty, leaving members of the community with no choice but to walk to neighbouring settlements in search of water.

The Drop4Drop team will provide health and hygiene training within the community and an elected water team will be given maintenance tools and training to help ensure the well stays in good working condition. The charity will maintain regular contact with the community. By continuing to work across India, Drop4Drop can ensure improvement of health and enable communities to focus on crucial provisions like education

David Hicks, Head of Residential and Hospitality Operations, at the university, said: “We are delighted to have been able to support Life Water and their charitable partner, Drop4Drop, in providing a sustainable source of drinking water to the Bachepalle community.

“The sales of Life Water through our outlets have made a significant difference to people’s lives and we will continue to support this hugely worthwhile project.”
