Lewis lands Spurs job

A University of Brighton sport journalism graduate has swapped the classroom for the Champions League after landing a full-time job at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

26 September 2019

Lewis Tizard, who graduated from his BA Sport Journalism degree in August with first-class honours, is now working in the media team of the 2019 Champions League finalists.

Lewis spent the 2018/19 season working on the award-winning Premier League Apprenticeship with Brighton and Hove Albion FC (BHAFC), which played a crucial role in securing his new job.

“This is a fantastic achievement for Lewis and thoroughly deserved,” said Owen Evans, BA Sport Journalism course leader. “To go straight from our newsroom into a Champions League is testament to his first class attitude and ability.

“The unique experience of working in a Premier League press box during his final year at The Amex gave him the skills, contacts and experience needed to secure this highly-coveted role, so our thanks go to the club for helping him achieve that. Combining exposure to the industry alongside university studies is a key part of our programme, so we’re delighted Lewis has done so well.”

Lewis’s duties will include covering Tottenham’s Champions League matches at the club’s new billion pound stadium, as well as the youth sides at the club’s Enfield Training Centre.

In November 2018, the Premier League Apprenticeship scheme won Innovator of the Year at the 2018 NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) Awards for Excellence. The 2017/18 apprentices all found full-time, paid work in the industry within six weeks of graduation: Sammy Brough (video content producer, Millwall FC), Jack Kinnersley (sports reporter, Mailonline.co.uk) Adam Powers, Matt Penn, Rhys Daly, Ryan Taylor (sports reporters, Daily Express).

Six second-year sport journalism students have just won apprenticeships with Brighton and Hove Albion for the 2019/20 season. They are: Tom Kelly, Jacob Panons, Matthew Watkinson, Frankie Levin, Lee Saunders and Ciaran Wiseman. As Matchday Media Assistants they will be involved with covering the club’s Premier League fixtures, interviewing high-profile managers and players from the top-flight of English football.
