Environmentally-focused business grant scheme expands to West Sussex

A grant scheme offering local businesses sustainability grants of up to £10,000 is expanding to offer help to West Sussex companies from September.

2 September 2021

The LoCASE (Low Carbon Across the South and East) scheme is supported by Clean Growth UK, which has over 2000 network members nationwide, and has already helped develop over 150 new planet-friendly products and services. The scheme is delivered in the south-east as part of the University of Brighton’s pioneering Green Growth Platform.

LoCASE in West Sussex is being delivered in partnership with West Sussex County Council. The County Council are providing partnership funding to support the scheme, and through this, to provide help and support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in West Sussex.

Previously, LoCASE Grants have been available to businesses in East Sussex, but are now available to West Sussex SMEs with fewer than 250 employees and turnover under £25.9m, to help them reduce their impact on the environment or better serve an environmentally-focused industry.

Two types of grant are available. Environmentally-focused businesses can apply for a LoCASE Business Growth and Innovation Grant, which can fund a variety of business growth projects, such as marketing, equipment upgrades and consultancy. A diverse range of businesses have got this grant, including those supplying renewable energy, energy storage and energy efficiency products, manufacturers, green architects and builders, recycling and re-use businesses, environmental advisors and consultants, and many more.

The second type of grant, the LoCASE Energy Efficiency grant, is open to any type of SME. These grants can be used for energy efficiency projects, such as LED lighting, insulation, heating or machinery upgrades, or renewable energy systems.

Zoë Osmond, Director, Clean Growth UK, said: “LoCASE is a fantastic opportunity for businesses across West Sussex to access extra cash to fuel their growth and reduce their carbon footprint. We’re delighted to be able to offer the funding across the county and work in partnership with West Sussex County Council. At Clean Growth UK we can also help companies develop the green products and services we need so urgently to address climate change, via links to the extensive specialist expertise available via our university hubs.

West Sussex County Council Leader Paul Marshall said: “This is an exciting initiative, with the County Council’s contribution enabling the £2million, EU-funded LoCASE programme to reach small and medium-sized enterprises in West Sussex.

“The support scheme will help integrate sustainability into business operations and is perfectly aligned with the council’s climate change strategy and our ambitious target to be carbon neutral by 2030. It also highlights our commitment to support the growth of the local green economy.”
