University of Brighton Professor Marina Novelli has been voted in as a Fellow of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism.
22 November 2022
For more than 20 years, Professor Novelli has made significant contributions to research into tourism industry policy, and challenges and opportunities related to sustainable tourism in Africa, Asia and Europe.
In recognition of this work and her ongoing research, Marina becomes one of just 84 members of this select society, which comprises the most prominent academics contributing to the study of tourism.
The news of Marina’s membership to the Academy comes just weeks after she won a Changemaker Impact Award for her work to support innovation and sustainability in the African tourism sector. Earlier this year, she was appointed as a member of the UN World Tourism Organization’s World Committee on Tourism Ethics.

Marina is also a member of the University of Brighton's Centre for Change, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management (CENTRIM) and founding member of the Tourism, Hospitality and Events Research Group.
Professor Novelli, Professor of Tourism and International Development in the University of Brighton's School of Business and Law, said: “This is the highest learned society in the field of tourism studies, it is therefore an honour for me to receive such a great recognition.
“I look forward to contributing to the Academy’s future as a new Fellow and join such a great group of colleagues.”
In order to become a Fellow, scholars must be nominated by another Fellow and go through an initial selection process, which successfully leads to an invitation to present at the Academy’s biennial conference. After this presentation invited scholars must be voted in by the majority of existing fellows on the basis of their profile and presentation.
Marina will officially be inducted as a fellow at the International Academy for the Study of Tourism’s next conference in 2024.
