International Women’s Day 2022: #BreakTheBias

Tuesday 8 March is International Women's Day.

International Women’s Day seeks to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and accelerate gender parity. This year’s theme – #BreakTheBias – encourages us all to imagine a gender equal world, free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Debra Humphris remarked:

"International Women’s Day allows us to reflect with pride on the achievements of the inspirational women from our staff and student community. My thanks go to our talented academics, pioneering researchers, skilled professional colleagues, as well as everyone providing vital support and services for our students – the change-makers of the future. Together, we all have a part to play in ending discrimination.

Last year, the University of Brighton received the Athena Swan Silver Award for our impact in addressing gender inequality; recognition of our progress but also our commitment to ongoing action. I am grateful to everyone involved in our continued efforts and for bringing our core value of inclusivity to life.

In 2021, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported a worsening of the gender pay gap across the wider economy, so I am also pleased to confirm that during this challenging year, we have continued to reduce our mean gender pay gap which now stands at 9.6%.

We are making progress. But we know that there is always more to do. Today, we take stock. We salute our women, thank every ally and stand together for a more inclusive world.”

Activities taking place at the university include #BreakTheBias: a panel event, featuring staff and alumni and hosted in collaboration with the University of Sussex. Chairing the event is Professor Ruth Whittaker, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education and Students) and Gender Champion:

I am delighted to chair an event with panelists with wide-ranging experience and talent, willing to share their insights. Our staff and students continue to make a difference to improve gender equality; breaking bias, barriers and boundaries.”
