Why students use Clearing: grades aren't the only reason

For many students, Clearing was once seen as a last-minute option – a route taken only if exam results didn't go to plan. Today, it's something very different.

New UCAS data from 2025 highlights how much Clearing has changed. Almost a third (29%) of all students applying to university entered through Clearing, while fewer than a quarter (23%) did so because they didn't achieve the grades needed for their original offer. A further one in five (20%) already held university offers but chose to change course or university instead.

Students are also taking a more considered approach than ever before, with almost all (92%) researching their options before Results Day. While teaching quality (92%) and facilities (91%) top their priorities, affordability remains front of mind, with almost three quarters (73%) concerned about the cost of living at university.

These changing priorities are reshaping the way universities approach Clearing too. Rather than simply offering places, students expect universities to demonstrate the quality of their teaching, the support they'll receive and the opportunities available once they arrive.

To help demystify the process, we asked James Barron, Student Community and Transition Officer at the University of Brighton, to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about Clearing.

What is Clearing – and who is it for?

James Barron: Clearing is the process that matches students with available university places. It's not just for students who missed their predicted grades. It's also open to people applying after the main UCAS deadline, those who've changed their minds about their course or university, and students with A levels, BTECs or other qualifications who haven't yet secured a place.

When does Clearing happen?

James Barron: Although many people associate Clearing with A-level results day, it actually opens on 1 July for students who already have their results and continues until late September. The busiest period is around results day which this year is 13 August, when many courses fill quickly. If you're considering Clearing, now is the perfect time to research your options so you're ready to make an informed decision.

Is it too late to apply if I haven't started looking yet?

James Barron: Not at all. Every year, many students begin exploring their options just before or on results day. Some even apply through Clearing without having made a previous UCAS application. There is plenty of guidance available, and at Brighton our team is on hand to help you through every step of the process.

How can I apply through Clearing?

James Barron: There are several ways to apply, including online and by phone. At Brighton, you'll find everything you need to know on our Clearing webpages, and our friendly advisers are available to answer questions and guide you through your application.

What support will I receive as a Clearing applicant?

James Barron: Support varies between universities, but at Brighton you'll have access to advice on student finance, accommodation, wellbeing and settling into university life. Our dedicated teams are available throughout the summer to help make your transition as straightforward as possible.

With almost three quarters (73%) of prospective students concerned about the cost of living at university, financial and practical support is an increasingly important factor when choosing where to study. That’s why at the University of Brighton, eligible students applying through Clearing can access Brighton Boost, which provides financial support towards the cost of starting university, including accommodation and commuting. Students can also access the Student Jobs Hub, free laptop loans, Brighton Students' Union Essentials and dedicated financial advice.

Since launching, Brighton Boost has provided more than £2.4 million in support. More than 1,700 students have received help with accommodation costs and over 900 have received support with commuting expenses. Find out more about Brighton Boost.

What courses are available through Clearing?

James Barron: Course availability varies, but at Brighton we expect places across a wide range of subjects, including nursing, art and design, business, engineering, education and sport, among others. Some courses are more competitive than others, so it's worth checking availability regularly or speaking to our advisers.

Can I visit before making a decision?

James Barron: Absolutely. We'll be running Clearing campus tours from A-level results day, giving offer holders the chance to explore our City, Falmer and Moulsecoomb campuses, meet staff and students, and get a feel for university life before making their decision.

What's your best advice for someone feeling unsure about Clearing?

James Barron: Don't panic. Clearing isn't a last-minute fallback – it's a well-established route into higher education used by thousands of students every year.
