Occupational therapy and people with learning disabilities

This study explored occupational therapy with people with learning disabilities across the United Kingdom from the perspectives of occupational therapists and paid carers. The research findings were presented at the College of Occupational Therapists Conference in Brighton in June 2009 and have been published by the College of Occupational Therapists.  This is being followed up in a detailed study of one setting.

This research was commissioned by the College of Occupational Therapists and its Specialist Section – People with Learning Disabilities.

Project objectives

The project’s aim was to explore and document the nature of occupational therapy practice with people with learning disabilities across the United Kingdom from the perspectives of occupational therapists and support workers

Project impact

Much of the content in the College of Occupational Therapists’ 2013 update of its principles for practice with people with learning disabilities was drawn from the findings of this project.
