Global crime trends and local impacts conference

The Criminology Research Group at the University of Brighton held a conference exploring global crime trends and local impacts. The event took place on 11 September 2014 at the Varley Conference Centre in Brighton.

Overview

The event related to two themes:

  • reflections on Ian Taylor’s book Crime in Context: A Critical Criminology of Market Societies (1999) 15 years on

  • reflections on the UK Government Serious and Organised Crime Strategy (2013).

Experts on aspects of organised/transnational or global crime presented on the broad trends and issues pertaining to their specialist area. Selected discussants picked up on the local impacts and implications from each presentation and then led a wider discussion on each topic.

The event attracted academics and local practitioners.
