In February 2016, Professor Marina Novelli was invited by the East Africa Tourism Platform (EATP) to facilitate a stakeholders’ forum on ‘Steering East Africa as a Single and Competitive Destination’ held in Kigali, Rwanda, with 30 government and private sectors’ representatives from EATP member states from Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania. The forum addressed questions on the feasibility and viability of East Africa as one tourism destination and key priorities to establish a programme of work, which addresses destinations’ needs.
The project commenced in 2016 and is ongoing.
The aim of this forum was to:
EATP is supported by Trademark East Africa and brings together the private sectors of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi and works closely with national ministries responsible for Tourism, Wildlife, Trade and Transport portfolios, the EAC Secretariat, East African Business Council and Private Sector Organisations in all EAC Partner states.
The discussions led to the identification of the next steps of the EATP engagements in promoting intra and inter-regional tourism through advocacy, marketing, facilitating access to finance and risk management services, skills development, research and information sharing.
