Acceptable use of AI
You can use Gen AI tools (eg Chat GTP, Gemini) to support your application but you must not use Gen AI to generate large amounts of content. This means you may, for example, use AI to help you brainstorm ideas or proofread your writing but you must not ask AI to write your personal statement or research proposal.
Downsides of using AI
We advise that Gen AI tools are used judiciously and that you familiarise yourself with the downsides of using AI. On university application forms, AI-supported and AI-generated content can seem generic and inauthentic. AI tools also produce ‘hallucinations’, such as information that seems plausible but is false, or references for academic papers that are non-existent. Your application will be read by disciplinary experts who will quickly spot these errors. The use of AI, therefore, may weaken your application and cause embarrassment.
Application requirements
Applicants who use AI to develop or support their application must include a short statement acknowledging how Gen AI has been used.
Where a research proposal is submitted as part of the application, we require all individual references to be accompanied by a DOI link.
If it is suspected that an application is supported by false information or is substantially generated using Gen AI tools, we will withdraw the application. If it becomes apparent following registration that your application has been substantially fabricated, your studies can be terminated.
