The University of Brighton is focused on advancing research that delivers impact for our institution, our local and regional communities, and global society. We foster an equitable, inclusive and dynamic research culture that nurtures its community.
As an institution, we are committed to the responsible assessment of research and researchers. We recognise the diverse contribution of colleagues across disciplines and career stages to research and knowledge exchange and evaluation is primarily based upon a system of rigorous peer review. This principle is embedded in our practice, with our assessment processes for both REF 2021 and REF 2029 using this approach.
In 2026, we became a signatory to the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA). DORA is a global initiative dedicated to improving research assessment practices. Our commitment to DORA reflects our institution’s primary value of equity and our determination to support our researchers throughout the institution.
We have aligned our processes for REF 2029 with the principles of DORA and the Leiden Manifesto and will build on this through the development of a Responsible Research Assessment Policy for our institution. Our Research and Knowledge Exchange Team aims to deliver this Policy by the end of the calendar year and will work to embed this into our wider research and knowledge exchange community and, through collaboration with our People Department, formally acknowledge this in our recruitment pages.
The implementation of DORA principles and responsible research assessment practices is being administered by our Research and Knowledge Exchange department. Questions can be directed to the Research Culture and Environment Officer at L.Greenslate@brighton.ac.uk.
