Sport and Tourism creating a global dreamland

Overview

In the globalised world of the twenty-first century, sport and tourism have become major components of local, regional and national economies. These overlapping but often distinctive areas of leisure provision are packaged and sold as spectacular events or places, where time can be suspended and the fantastic is possible. Through a discussion of Professor Nauright’s personal and professional experiences of living and working in eight countries, and spending time on each continent, he explores the global 'dreamlands' generating in the promotion of leisure time activities.

This lecture will take you from the greens of Augusta National golf course, to the mists of time in Aotearoa, from the 'dreaming' in Australia to the imagineering of Walt Disney, and from the clear seas of Barbados to the Great White North, stopping along the way for a match or two at Villa Park or Williams-Brice Stadium in South Carolina. As Professor Nauright does this, he will attempt to explain both his attraction to sport and tourism experiences, and his concerns about the present and future state of the world, and the role of sport and tourism in it.
