Student Support and Guidance Tutors

Our Student Support and Guidance Tutors (SSGTs) are dedicated to supporting you with any issues that might be impacting your studies, your wellbeing and your experience with us.

Information for current Brighton students

If you're a current student at the University of Brighton, you can find more information about your SSGT, including contact information, on My Brighton (under Support and Health/Wellbeing).

Each academic school has at least one SSGT. They are a great source of information and advice and are available for all students including apprentices and postgraduate research students. You will usually get to meet your SSGT in the first few weeks of starting university.

You can find SSGT contact details on My Brighton (under Support and Health/Wellbeing). Please get in touch and we will be happy to engage in-person, by Teams, email or phone; whichever you find most convenient.

Self-help

A range of self-help resources, including Togetherall, are also available.

What your SSGT can do for you

SSGTs are part of the Student Wellbeing Team but work within schools alongside academic staff – information is only shared with schools if you have given them permission to do so.

The Student Services statement of service (pdf) contains more information about confidentiality.

SSGTs will listen to your concerns, find out what is truly going on and how things are affecting you. They will talk through your options and may direct you to specialist services across the university as well as the support available locally.

SSGTs often work closely with your Personal Academic Tutor and Course Leaders. While an SSGT provides guidance relating to wellbeing and personal issues, a Personal Academic Tutor can help you to make sure you are getting the most out of your studies and receiving the academic support you need. An SSGT may refer you to a Personal Academic Tutor, or vice-versa.

Please enable targeting cookies in order to view this video content on our website, or you can watch the video on YouTube.

You can talk through anything affecting your ability to achieve with your SSGT, including:

  • health, wellbeing and self-care
  • anxiety and stress-related issues
  • Additional Considerations applications and processes
  • motivation, procrastination and time-management
  • isolation, loneliness and homesickness
  • accommodation issues
  • difficulties with your course – guidance on intermission, transfers and withdrawal
  • discrimination, bullying and harassment - reporting and support.
