Undergraduate degrees

Studying a LLB law degree at university will prepare you for a legal career as well as broader skills in analysis, logical reasoning and critical thinking – all of which are highly sought after in many careers.

Our law degrees give you an excellent grounding in the seven foundations of legal knowledge subjects (contract law, tort law, public law, criminal law, land law, equity and trusts, and EU Law) required by the Bar Standards Board to satisfy the academic stage of training for barristers.

They also align with key areas tested by the Solicitors Qualifying Exam, providing a solid base for you to prepare for SQE1 if you plan to progress into a legal career as a solicitor. Knowledge of these subjects is also useful for work as a paralegal, a legal executive or for other careers within business, HR, the courts and the public sector.

Postgraduate degree

Our postgraduate law degree course supports a career change to a solicitor or barrister.

Recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority as a Qualifying Law Degree for 2021 entrants, our LLM Law Conversion course covers the foundations of legal knowledge required by the Bar Standards Board to satisfy the academic stage of training for barristers.

Our foundations of legal knowledge modules are also aligned with the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE), providing a solid base for you to prepare for SQE1 should you wish to qualify on the new solicitor’s route.

  • Business and management PhDs (this includes law)
  • Tourism and hospitality PhD

We also have research centres and groups which focus on the school’s particular strength in innovation management and entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility and social justice, as well as tourism and sustainability.

The advantage of studying law at Brighton is that they give you the option to not only combine it with business, but also to do a business placement. It enabled me to take a year out to focus and be in the workplace, meaning I came back to the final year feeling much more engaged with the topics.

What our graduates say

Jade Chalker

Jade Chalker, Law LLB(Hons) and International Law and Social Justice LLM

“I chose to study law as it helps you to think from a different perspective. At an undergraduate level, you’re learning the basics of law. These include the areas that everyone pursuing a law career needs to know.

“Studying at a masters level is much more complex and specific. You’ll be looking more in depth at an area of law and the jurisprudence behind it.”

Jessica Akinboyewa

Jessica Akinboyewa, Law with Business LLB(Hons)

“I want to become a barrister and this course has given me the awareness of what is required of me in the future and an understanding of what area of law I want to practice.

“My law tutors were extremely helpful and made me open to a lot of opportunities I wasn’t aware of.”

Zoe Bowler

Zoe Bowler, Law with Criminology LLB(Hons)

“At university I took the time to work ‘smart’ through my studies and used every opportunity to learn.

“Achieving a first in my degree showcased my true potential and I was given the opportunity to attend a vacation scheme with city law firm Charles Russell Speechlys. Through this I was offered a training contract.”
