Starting at uni? Explore your subject

I have been thrilled by the diverse subjects that we have worked on. I thought I would be intimidated by the fast pace, but it has helped my writing develop more than I could have imagined. The tutors bring so many new approaches to tease out creativity and they are all very inspiring. The guest lecturers have provided insight that I will never forget and will carry into my creative writing processes.

Exploring, questioning, learning

Students on bean bags in the Creativity Centre

"Sometimes students choose creative writing because they think it will be the soft option but they soon realise that writing is personal, difficult and important. We encourage students to think and work outside of the classroom, applying their writing and creativity to real life scenarios, pushing them academically, vocationally and personally."

Dr Jess Moriarty, creative writing lecturer and founder of Work Write Live

Chrystie Myketiak

“My teaching is informed by the goal of transforming the classroom to a place where students embrace the possibilities of self-determination in their studies. I plan the classroom experience, assessments and modules so that students realise that though critical thinking and analytical work can be difficult and time-intensive, it can also be the source of passionate engagement, pleasure and courage.”

Chrystie Myketiak, English Language BA(Hons)

Ross Adamson

"It's important that we study and debate the implications of our media cultures. How are texts constructed? What do we make of them? What happens when we make our own media?"

Ross Adamson, media lecturer

Dr Kate Aughterson

"How is the narrator of a novel different from the author? How have films taken on the popularisation of classic books and with what consequences? How many of the texts you know feature an absent mother – and why is this? Why do so many texts revolve around the theme of a fall from grace?"

Dr Kate Aughterson, English Literature lecturer and author

Dr Tim Wharton

"Most people share the intuition that what a speaker 'says' falls short of what they 'mean' – or that they might mean something else entirely. But have you ever wondered how hearers bridge the gap between what speakers say and what they mean? Are we in a sense mind-readers? My work begins with the assumption that we are."

Dr Tim Wharton, Linguistics lecturer and author
