  • Annual Brighton Trans, Non-Binary and Intersex Conference

Annual Brighton Trans, Non-Binary and Intersex Conference returns to the University of Brighton

The third Annual Brighton Trans, Non-Binary and Intersex Conference is being held at the University of Brighton on 19- 20 July 2018 in the run up to Brighton Trans Pride.

12 June 2018

Alongside Brighton Trans Pride (20–22 July 2018), this year’s Annual Brighton Trans, Non-Binary and Intersex Conference seeks to bring trans, non-binary and intersex people, researchers, allies and those who want to work better with these communities together to work towards making a more trans, non-binary and intersex inclusive society.

The conference invites trans, non-binary and intersex people; researchers; people from the public; community and voluntary sector; and those who want to know more about trans lives and issues to this year’s event. Building on previous success, the 2018 conference will be a two day event and organisers have linked up with Intersex UK to improve the representation of intersex issues within the programme including a panel, films and Q+A.

Keynote speakers include:

  • Professor Stephen Whittle (Manchester Metropolitan University)
  • Holly Greenbury and Dawn Vago (Intersex UK)
  • Monroe (Model, activist and University of Brighton alumna)

In addition, Fox Fisher (another former University of Brighton student and also an honorary graduate) and their partner, Owl will be comperes for the two day conference.

Organiser Katherine Johnson, Professor of Psychology and Sexualities and founding Director of the Centre for Transforming Sexuality and Gender, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the third Annual Trans, Non-Binary and Intersex Conference, working with partners across Brighton & Hove to make the city more inclusive.

“We've secured high profile keynote speakers, including our alumna Munroe, and are particularly pleased to have such a strong programme of presentations from Intersex UK. We are also grateful to our funders as without their ongoing financial support this event could not remain free for members of the trans, non-binary and intersex communities.”

Professor Debra Humphris, Vice Chancellor and University Executive Board LGBT+ Equality Champion at the University of Brighton said: “The University of Brighton is proud to support The Annual Trans, Non-Binary and Intersex Conference, which is an important event for both the university and the city. The conference was born from the city’s Trans Needs Assessment and research conducted between the university and LGBT Switchboard. We are committed to continue to work with partners across the city to ensure that trans, non-binary and intersex people thrive in our community.”

Sarah Tighe-Ford, Equalities Manager at Brighton and Hove City Council said: “The Trans Need Assessment was commissioned by the Council to address issues highlighted by the Trans Equality Scrutiny Group, which identified the trans and non-binary community as a vulnerable group and highlighted the need to remove the stigma and build relationships. The Annual Trans, Non-Binary and Intersex Conference is a fascinating event and a valuable opportunity for people to find out how they can help ensure that the needs of trans, non-binary and intersex people in our city are met.”

Funders of the event are: University of Brighton, University of Sussex, Brighton & Hove City Council, Sussex Police, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, Clinical Commissioning Group.

Registration for the event, at the university’ Grand Parade Building, BN2 0JY, is now closed.
