If you're withdrawing or taking a break from university
If you’re withdrawing or taking a break (intermitting) from your course, your accommodation agreement will end once all of the following steps are completed:
- you’ve formally withdrawn or intermitted from your course
- you’ve completed a termination form
- you’ve returned your keys or key card to your hall’s reception.
You can fill in a termination form at your hall’s reception when you move out or download one (termination form pdf) and email it to accommodation@brighton.ac.uk.
Depending on your move-out date, you may either be due a refund or owe some rent. We’ll confirm this once your agreement is officially ended. A £50 termination fee applies and you’ll receive instructions on how to pay this.
Moving out early but continuing your studies
If you’re continuing your studies but want to move out early, you’ll still be responsible for the rent until the end of your contract unless you find another student to take your place.
To end your contract early:
- you must find a suitable replacement tenant (they must be a full-time University of Brighton student, not already living in university halls, have no rent arrears and pass reference checks)
- you must complete a termination form (pdf) and return your keys or key card.
If you find a replacement tenant, the termination fee is £25. If the university finds one, the fee is £50.
You can advertise your room on our UoB Housemates Facebook group group to help find a replacement.
If another student moves in, your rent liability will end from the date they take over the room.
Rent refunds and payments
- If you’ve overpaid, you’ll receive a refund (minus the termination fee and any other applicable charges).
- Refunds will go to the original payment method, so double-check your details with the Income team at income@brighton.ac.uk.
- If you owe rent, we’ll let you know how to pay.
Before you move out
- Make sure your room is clean and free of personal belongings. Additional charges may apply if extra cleaning or rubbish removal is required.
- If you don’t return your keys or key card, you’ll be charged for replacements.
