University of Brighton bursary

About this bursary

This bursary is for undergraduate students who are starting their course in the 2019–20 academic year and who are normally resident in England or an EU country. It supports students from lower income families and is funded by the university.

The award is a cash bursary of £500 in each year of study.

Students on a part-time course who meet the eligibility criteria will receive a pro rata cash bursary. Additional criteria apply in relation to study intensity of part-time courses.

The bursary will be paid in two equal instalments in January 2020 and May 2020.

Alternative financial support

If you are a care leaver or an estranged student you will not be eligible for the University of Brighton bursary but alternative support may be available:

  • Care leaver's bursary
  • Estranged student's bursary

Student Support Fund

If you experience short term financial hardship you can apply for additional help from the Student Support Fund.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for this bursary, you must be a full-time student starting in 2019–20 on one of the following:

  • an undergraduate course, including pre-registration nursing and allied health courses
  • a postgraduate pre-registration allied health course
  • a non-salaried designated PGCE course.

You must also:

  • be normally resident in England or an EU country
  • be assessed as eligible to receive full standard student support from Student Finance England
  • have a residual household income of up to £25,000 p.a.
  • not already in receipt of our care leavers' or estranged students' bursary.

Students on part-time courses studying between 30 and 90 credits during the year who meet the other criteria will receive a pro rata cash bursary in each year of study.

Your eligibility for this bursary will be re-assessed each academic year.

Exceptions

Students in receipt of the care leaver's bursary, the estranged student's bursary or an external bursary may not be eligible for university bursaries.

Students who repeat a year of study will not be eligible for additional bursary funding during their repeat year.

How to apply

You do not need to make a separate application to be considered for this bursary, unless you are an EU student, as we use the information you have provided to UCAS and Student Finance England to assess your eligibility. EU students need to complete the EU Higher Education Bursary application form provided by the EU team at Student Finance England when you apply for a tuition fee loan.

Please make sure that you:

  • apply for your student tuition fee loan, as soon as you can. Applications open in spring term 2019
  • apply for your means-tested maintenance loan (students resident in England only)
  • (EU students only, not UK) complete the EU Higher Bursary application form provided by the EU team at Student Finance England
  • agree to Student Finance England sharing the information
  • contact Student Finance England if you are not sure whether you have given this permission.

We will email you in the autumn to confirm whether you will receive this bursary for the academic year.
