Summer Hardship Fund

This fund is aimed at full-time, continuing, home students who experience financial difficulties over the long summer holiday.

Applications are assessed on a case by case basis and if you are made an award, it is paid to you direct from the university and you do not have to pay it back.

Details for summer 2025 will be added nearer the time.

Overview

About this fund

The Summer Fund is a non-repayable grant awarded to students who are in financial difficulty and need extra support with living costs over the long summer vacation.

You can still apply for this fund if you have already received the Student Support Fund during the academic year.

How are applications assessed?

Applications are assessed based on individual need and personal financial circumstances and considered on a case by case basis. However, as resources are limited, priority will be given to students who fulfil certain criteria listed under ‘Who is eligible’. Evidence will be required to support your application.

Who is eligible

You are eligible to apply for the Summer Fund if you are a full-time, continuing, undergraduate student fully enrolled on a standard length course and due to progress in September 2024.

Priority will be given to students who can demonstrate any of the following circumstances:

  • You have caring responsibilities - for a child, relative, partner or other adult
  • You have health issues or are a disabled student

If you do not fulfil this criteria you may still apply, so please tell us as much as you can in your cover letter.

All continuing students in receipt of a care leavers bursary or estranged students bursary will be contacted separately so do not need to apply.

Health science students including apprentices (both February and September cohorts) enrolled on long courses more than 45 weeks in duration are not eligible for the Summer Fund, but may still be able to apply to the Student Support Fund until Friday 12 July if they have not already submitted an application this academic year.

Please phone 01273 642888 or email studentadvice@brighton.ac.uk for more information, and please provide your student number.

How to apply

There is a short application form to complete and you need to provide supporting evidence such as bank statements, rent or mortgage liability, DWP benefits and a covering letter fully explaining your reasons for applying.

Please contact the Student Money Advice team by phone 01273 642888 or email studentadvice@brighton.ac.uk to check your eligibility and request a form. Once you have completed the form and gathered the required evidence, you can email your completed form and scanned evidence back to the Funds team direct: funds@brighton.ac.uk.

Please submit your application and all supporting evidence before midnight on 12 July 2024.

We will contact you by email, using your university account and we aim to respond within 14 days of receipt of your application.

All awards will be made before the end of July.
