Greener living

The University of Brighton is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the south-east coast, bordering the stunning South Downs national park.

We see more evidence every day of the negative human impact on our fragile ecosystems. Here at Brighton, we aim to redress the balance, with practical initiatives to keep all members of our fast-growing university informed and involved.

Sustainability

With some 18,000 students and 2,400 staff at the University of Brighton, it is critically important that we realise the significant impact of a community this size on our environment. Every one of us has a part to play in order to better conserve resources and reduce pollution.

This is why we define sustainability as one of our core values that we are continually researching and putting into practice.

Our sustainability pages detail much of the work that we do towards achieving sustainability as an institution.

Cutting carbon: c-change

c-change is the university’s award-winning internal carbon reduction campaign, especially designed to engage, inspire and support our staff and students to cut carbon, both on and off campus.

Through year-round campaign events on campus and in our halls of residence, we are engaging and inspiring our community to cut their carbon.

Visit the c-change website and get involved.

Recycling

Our aim is to promote a zero waste culture of ‘rethink, reduce, reuse and recycle’, in order to significantly reduce waste and increase recycling across all areas of the university estate.

We have committed to recycle 75 per cent of our waste and have heavily invested heavily in waste and recycling facilities which are standardised across the entire university. The bins are always located in pairs (one recycling and one waste bin), making the choice to recycle just as easy as throwing something away.

Travel and transport

We encourage students, staff and visitors to travel as sustainably as possible to the university to reduce our impact on the environment, carbon emissions and improve health and wellbeing.

One of the key aims of the university's Travel Plan Strategy is to reduce single occupancy vehicle – i.e. students  or staff driving to campus alone.

As part of the c-change campaign we provide information for students across all campuses on travelling to uni. Visit the c-change travel pages for information and advice on travelling to uni by foot, public transport and car-sharing, as well as student discounts.
