Formula Student

Formula Student is Europe's most established educational motorsport competition, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Backed by industry and high-profile engineers, the competition takes place at Silverstone each summer. It aims to develop enterprising and innovative young engineers and encourage more young people to take up a career in engineering.

Engineering students at the University of Brighton have participated in Formula Student since 2016, by designing, building and testing a race car each year. With your help, they can continue to participate in this incredible project.

Or you may be interested in employing our Formula Student graduates and students, who are extremely sought-after by the engineering industry.

Employ our graduates and students

Graduates and students who work on Formula Student are extremely sought-after. For the motorsport industry, the project is the standard for engineering graduates to meet, transitioning them from university to the workplace. It's a kite-mark for real-world engineering experience.

We are developing the engineers of the future, and already many of our graduates have secured full-time roles at prestigious companies including global engineers Ricardo UK and the UK's largest car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover.

Contact us

  • If you would like to employ a graduate, or have a student on placement, don't hesitate to contact us at formulastudent@brighton.ac.uk.
  • You can also upload your job opportunities to free vacancy service.
As a small company, producing low volume, ultra-high performance cars, it’s vital that graduates have hands on experience of building, running and problem solving on a real vehicle. Formula Student gives that experience and is, we feel, a vital step to a career in the automotive industry."

Simon Saunders, MD, Ariel Motor Company

Student offered doctorate

Simon Harvey is undertaking an engineering doctorate in advanced engine technology in association with Ricardo at University of Brighton after qualifying with a Mechanical Engineering MEng.

He credits having the opportunity to do the doctorate partly with his involvement in Formula Student.
