How to apply through Clearing

To apply through Clearing is actually pretty simple – you just need a few things ready before you contact us.

It’s also worth remembering that in the university Clearing process you can apply through Clearing without UCAS – this is called direct application.

Here’s what will happen, depending on where you are currently in your application:

Find your course

Clearing Dates for 2023

You can apply through Clearing 5 July–17 October 2023.

I've got my results, I have a UCAS profile and I want to come to Brighton

  • Call us to discuss your situation, or if our lines are closed you can apply online from 5 July 2023.
  • Our admissions team could make you an offer which you then accept on your UCAS Hub.

I've got my results, I don't have a UCAS profile and I want to come to Brighton

  • Call us and we'll advise you on suitable options or if our lines are closed, you can apply online from 5 July 2023. If we make you an offer of a place in Clearing you'll need to accept it using a Confirmation of Clearing Application form which we can talk you through and send to you.
  • We'll then be in touch with advice about online enrolment, accommodation and information about life as a student in Brighton.

I'm waiting for my results and want to find out more about coming to Brighton

  • Give us a call and we'll explain your options – this is a great opportunity to ask more questions about the course you are interested in and learn more about how to apply through Clearing.
  • When you get your results, call us again and hopefully we will be able to make you an offer.

I'm an international student and I want to apply to Brighton

  • Give us a call and we can explain how to go through Clearing as an international student, or if our lines are closed you can apply online.

What to say to universities in Clearing when you call?

Before you call

Make a list of questions you’d like to ask us and have the following things ready before you call:

  • a list of the courses or subject areas you’re interested in
  • your qualifications and grades (if you’re waiting for exam results, call us and we’ll explain your options)
  • your UCAS ID number (If you are applying through Clearing without UCAS, you won’t have one)
  • your date of birth, postal address, email address and phone number.

For some courses you’ll also need to have a link to an online portfolio. Here’s how to create an online portfolio.

On the call

  • Call our Clearing hotline on 01273 644000.
  • You’ll be speaking with a member of the admissions team and possibly an admissions tutor
  • When you're thinking about what to say to universities in Clearing, just remember to be yourself. During the call they will have questions for you so have that list ready. Relax, it's not a test, it's about you finding the right place for you.
  • You might receive a verbal offer - this means you will have a place held with us. If you get a verbal offer we will email you confirming this with advice on how to accept the offer

If you need to come to interview, here’s the guidance on how you can prepare for a Clearing interview.

Understanding how to apply through UCAS Clearing is just about knowing where you are in the university Clearing process. It’s actually much easier than most people think. Every year all kinds of people come through Clearing and go on to achieve excellent results. Clearing is about finding the right place for you.

I would tell future prospective students that Brighton cares and will help you make a home for yourself here, where tutors and other services care about you personally and want to see you succeed.
