Welcome from the Director of the research Centre for Lifelong Health, Professor Katherine Staines
Average life expectancy has been steadily increasing in recent decades—a fact that should be celebrated. However, for many, these additional years of life are spent with one or more chronic diseases that can negatively impact quality of life and independence.
At the Centre for Lifelong Health, we are committed to improving health by understanding the complex, interconnected biological factors that shape lifelong health. Our research centre is dedicated to advancing this vision—from bench to bedside—by fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and engaging with policymakers and the public.
With more than 50 members, our centre brings together expertise in ageing, cell biology, chemistry, exercise physiology, immunology, materials science, microbiology, neuroscience, and nutrition. Our goal is to develop early diagnostics and novel treatments that promote healthy ageing and extend health span.
To enable this agenda, we foster multidisciplinary collaborations—both nationally and internationally—with charitable organisations, healthcare practitioners, businesses, and academic institutions.
We welcome new collaborators at all career stages. We offer supervisory support for PhD candidates and host international visiting researchers. External visitors benefit from access to state-of-the-art laboratories, including the Brighton Integrated Genomics Facility, a dedicated imaging suite, and advanced cell culture facilities.
Our multi-disciplinary work has led to innovative solutions for a range of health conditions, influenced government policy, and helped train the next generation of researchers dedicated to lifelong health.
