International students apply to the university in the same way as UK students, but there are different application procedures for different types of courses:
- undergraduate study
- postgraduate study
- research study
- university preparation courses and pre-masters programmes
- English language programmes.

Details of the academic and English language requirements for your course are on our course finder. We help many students from Japan to improve their qualifications to meet entry requirements.
We require students taking the Kotogakko Sotsugyo Shomeisho (Upper Secondary School Leaving Certificate) to take and successfully complete an international foundation year or equivalent.
We require applicants to hold either a bachelor degree (Gakushi) with a high GPA or a master’s degree (Shushi) from a prestigious Japanese university.

Degree preparation courses at the International College
If you complete your pathway course at the International College at the required level, you are guaranteed entry to a degree at the University of Brighton. Available degree subject areas include accounting and finance, art and design, business management, international hospitality management, law with business, international event management, and many more.

The University of Brighton Centre for Academic English Language Development provides a comprehensive range of academic English language preparation courses for students who need to improve their English before starting a UK university degree.
Successful completion of one of our English courses guarantees your progression to a degree course at the University of Brighton.

Immigration and visas
Generally, prior entry clearance (ie a visa) is required for students coming from Japan. To obtain a visa you will need to have an unconditional offer of a place at the University of Brighton and your CAS number from the university. You will need to prove that you have the funds to pay your tuition fees and living expenses.

There are scholarship opportunities that are offered by many organisations in addition to the University of Brighton scholarships.
For students from Japan, this includes:
- Daiwa Foundation Tohoku Scholarships – from a Foundation with the broad purpose of supporting closer links between the UK and Japan and with a specific educational remit. In partnership with the British Council in Japan. For post-secondary level Japanese students from any part of Tohoku who may wish to study in the UK or who are currently studying in the UK.
