University creative writing tutor among top authors at Fringe literary salon

Prize-winning poet John McCullough will join other leading writers for a Brighton Fringe literary salon on the deck of Brighton's BAi360 on Friday 18 June.

18 June 2021

Dr McCullough teaches creative writing at University of Brighton, as well as lecturing in the School of Humanities. His latest collection Reckless Paper Birds won the 2020 Hawthornden Prize for Literature and was shortlisted for the Costa Poetry Award. He has also won the Polari First Book Prize, and had collections named among Books of the Year in The Independent, The Guardian and The Observer.

Other writers reading at the free (but ticketed) event – organised by Vanguard Readings and running from 7-9pm – are award-winning novelist SJ Watson (Before I Go To Sleep, Final Cut), Hannah Tovey (The Education of Ivy Edwards and the soon-to-be published Is This It?), poet and Faber Academy director Richard Skinner (Invisible Sun) and Susannah Wise (This Fragile Earth). The event will be hosted by Hove-based novelist Helen Trevorrow (In The Wake, New Brighton).

Helen Trevorrow said: "The deck is such a fabulous setting to hear some very exciting writers in the flesh! We've got two of this summer's most anticipated debut novelists, one of the UK's most established thriller writers, and two fabulous award-winning poets. I can't think of a better way to be inspired while watching the sun go down."

Booking for the Salon is free, but only limited tickets remain. Dr McCullough's website offers information on his other collections, plus a video about Reckless Paper Birds. You can see a video of him reading the poem Spacecraft on YouTube.
