My PhD experience at the University of Brighton has been outstanding. The supervision has been consistent and incredibly supportive, and the additional research training and opportunities have greatly enhanced my learning experience.

Choose Brighton

Outstanding research environment

Centres of Research and Knowledge Exchange Excellence across our internationally-recognised disciplines foster major research strengths recognised in REF 2021 and by global partners.

Expert supervision

Every doctoral student is supported by a dedicated, fully trained supervisory team, usually of two academics.

Postgraduate researcher development training

We offer workshops to support the professional and skills development of our doctoral students, including academic language training for students whose first language isn't English.

Progression support

From research plan to viva, our workshops and specialist staff guide students through the major milestones of their PhD.

Doctoral student community

Our vibrant research environment offers numerous opportunities for students to connect with their peers, such as online inductions, research seminars, reading groups, informal networking and support groups.

Conference funding

All (self-funded) doctoral researchers are eligible to apply for one grant per year to support conference attendance.

Research networks

Many of our students are aligned to our specialist research centres and groups both within and outside of their disciplinary school; all departments have strong connections to regional, national and international research networks.

Scholarships and discounts

We have a range of scholarship funds available to both international and UK students, including scholarships especially for University of Brighton graduates and these outstanding opportunities to secure fully funded studentships.

Flexible research study for everyone

Around one third of our doctoral researchers study part-time, with students from a wide range of backgrounds joining us in their 20s through to their 60s.

Great locations

Our campuses are spread across the south-coast from Brighton seafront to the South Downs National Park and Eastbourne.

Support services

We offer a range of excellent support services including wellbeing support and counselling and disability services.
