Emeritus Professor Ann Moore

Professor Ann Moore retired from the University of Brighton at the end of August 2015 having been Head of the Centre for Health Research, School of Health Sciences since March 2014 and previously Director of the Clinical Research Centre for Health professions from 1998 to 2014. She is a physiotherapist by background and a specialist in musculoskeletal physiotherapy. Her work over the last 20 years has focused on researching into musculoskeletal conditions and on building research capacity within the physiotherapy profession and more latterly, more generally, in the Allied Health Professions since 2012.

In the Queen’s Birthday Honors 2016 she was awarded a CBE in recognition of her services to physiotherapy.

Ann is currently Director of the Council for Allied Health Professions Research (CAHPR) and Editor in Chief of Manual Therapy an International Journal of Musculoskeletal Science and Practice.

My work has always focused on increasing the evidence base of musculoskeletal physiotherapy from both patients and clinician’s perspectives. I am also very committed to increasing research capacity and capability across the Allied Health Professions.

My research interests

My interests lie in the following: musculoskeletal physiotherapy; self-management strategies, the patient experience, evidence-based practice models and oral histories of manual therapists. I am also keen to develop further art and health projects in the field of musculoskeletal conditions.

  • Development and validation of an in-patient satisfaction questionnaire in partnership with Mr Chris Mercer at Worthing Hospitals Trust
  • Development of Standardised Data Collection Tools for Osteopathy in collaboration with Carol Fawkes and Dr Janine Leach
  • Development of Research Priorities for UK osteopathy in collaboration with Dr Alison Rushton (University of Birmingham) and Dr Dawn Carnes and Carol Fawkes (Barts and the London).
  • Patients and practitioners’ views of self-management for low back pain, RfPB, in collaboration with Dr Carol McCrum, Dr Vinette Cross, Emmanuel Defever and Professor Paul Stenner .
  • Validation and Reliability of the Brighton Musculoskeletal Patient recorded outcome measurement tool in collaboration with Dr Liz Bryant and six physiotherapy consultants across the South East of England.
  • Significant walks project – an art and health project exploring individuals experiences of non-specific low back pain in collaboration with Dr Shirley Chubb and Dr Neil Bryant from Chichester University and Dr Kambiz Saber-Sheikh –University of Brighton

Biography

I qualified as a physiotherapist in 1973 and worked in Coventry Hospitals from 1974 to 1977.In 1977 I registered for a Certificate in Education at Wolverhampton Polytechnic and became a student Physiotherapy teacher at Coventry School of Physiotherapy. I completed my teaching qualifications in 1979 and also became a full member of the Musculoskeletal Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (MACP) in the same year having undertaken specialist training in 1978/79. In 1979 I taught Physiotherapy at the Woodlands School of Physiotherapy and then in 1980 moved to a lecturing post at Coventry Polytechnic. In 1981 I registered for a PhD in the field of low back pain and successfully completed my PhD in 1989. In 1990 I took up a new role as Principal lecturer in Physiotherapy at the then Brighton Polytechnic. In 1994 I took up the role of Head of Research in the then School of Health Professions. In 1998 I was made a Professor of Physiotherapy at the University of Brighton. In 2013 the School of Health Professions merged with the School of Nursing and Midwifery to become the School of Health Sciences and until September 1st 2015 I continued as Professor of Physiotherapy and became the Head of the Centre for Health Research in the new School of Health Sciences. I therefore worked as an academic/researcher from 1980 to 2015. I retired from my post at the University of Brighton at the end of August 2015 and was delighted to be awarded an Emeritus Professorship in September 2015.

I have presented over 200 keynote addresses at national and international conferences over the last 30 years, and have published over 100 full-length research articles in peer-reviewed journals. In recognition of my scholarly and research activities I was awarded a Fellowship by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in 1999 and I was also awarded a Fellowship of the MACP in 2003. I was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree by Bedford University in 2012 in recognition of my work in supporting research capacity building in the Allied Health Professions and in Osteopathy. I am currently Director of the Council for Allied Health Professions Research (CAHPR) which has been formed through bringing together the Research Forum for Allied Health Professions and the Allied Health Professions Research Network which I developed and chaired from 2004 to 2014. I am President of NAEP the National Association for Educators in Practice and I am President of Physiofirst the UKs Private practitioner organisation. I am also Editor in Chief of Manual Therapy an International Journal of Musculoskeletal Science and Practice and have been in this role since 1995.
