Alternative routes into medicine

Our Biological Sciences and Biomedical Science BSc(Hons) and MSci courses, and Pharmacy MPharm open up a range of exciting, rewarding career opportunities, including an alternative route to a degree in medicine.

Students on these courses at Brighton who fulfil the eligibility criteria are guaranteed an interview with Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS).

  • Study a degree accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) or the Royal Society of Biology (RBS).
  • Benefit from inter-professional learning opportunities with Brighton and Sussex Medical School, run in partnership by the universities of Brighton and Sussex.

Guaranteed interview scheme for medicine

We will support your application for medicine by:

  • giving you an opportunity to interview a medic as part of the careers module in your second year
  • providing references from your personal tutor and project supervisor
  • advising you on how to write your personal statement and helping prepare you for your interview.

You'll also need to:

  • take the UCAT in your year of application
  • make a UCAS application to BSMS by 15 October in your year of application
  • have an excellent record of class attendance and assignment submission by deadline.

Design and complete your own advanced project supervised by a Brighton researcher in your final year.

Specialist facilities

Gain practical experience with facilities including: patient simulators, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry, image analysis suite with electron microscopes, confocal microscope and atomic force microscopes, high-performance liquid chromatography, primary cell/tissue and secondary cell culture facility, genomics/proteomics facility for analysis of cell genes and proteins.

Biomedical science is a great option if you want a broad knowledge of clinically related subjects, as well as various practical skills. The course covers a huge range of topics so there's something for everyone. Time spent in the lab means you’ll gain the practical skills and knowledge needed to become a biomedical scientist once you graduate, and the course material is a great foundation if you choose to go on to graduate-entry medicine.
