School of Architecture and Design

Our architecture and design community is based at our Moulsecoomb campus in Brighton, where specialist facilities allow students the space to experiment in a creative and collaborative environment.

Courses within architecture and planning share two floors of active studios, replicating professional life. Product designers work in the fully equipped creativity centre with access to extensive workshop facilities. Academic study is closely linked to industry practice, with courses accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Institution of Engineering Designers and the Royal Town Planning Institute.

The success of architecture and design at Brighton is reflected in its internationally respected professors, its world-leading research impact, the reputations of its alumni and in the creative and productive atmosphere created by its staff and students.

Art and design at Brighton is ranked 8th in the UK and in the top 40 globally by the QS World University Rankings 2019.

About us

Modern facilities

Students on our Architecture and Planning courses work together in lively shared studio spaces, making, modelling and drawing. You'll have access to modelling and construction workshops, IT facilities and specialist software to help you develop the skills required.

Our Product Design students work in their own studio workspace in the Creativity Centre. You will have access to a design studio and specialist facilities including 3D print workspaces, metal and welding workshops, finish room, wood, wind tunnel and a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) workshop.

Technicians are on hand to all students to offer expert guidance on the use of all facilities. They offer support and training with machinery and software as well as professional knowledge and advice for making and manufacturing your prototypes.

Placements

Product Design courses offer an optional placement year, which is highly valued by employers. You will put your specialist skills and knowledge into practice and gain vital experience that will enhance your CV and may even help you secure a job offer. The experience is invaluable in helping you become a design professional.

Our students have undertaken placements at Adidas, L’Oreal, Triumph, the Body Shop, Puma and Mini Cooper. Others have pursued their own entrepreneurial projects.

Awards and accreditations

Our Architecture BA(Hons) degree is a professionally recognised qualification that leads to exemption from Part 1 of the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) examinations. MA Architecture is prescribed by the ARB and validated by RIBA, giving exemption from RIBA Part II. The postgraduate diploma in Professional Practice at Brighton is a professionally recognised qualification, with successful completion of the course allowing candidates to register with the ARB and seek election as a member of the RIBA.

ARB and RIBA logos

Our Product Design courses are accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) for the purpose of meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Registered Product Designer (RProdDes). IED student membership is free to full-time students for the duration of their studies and for the first year of graduate membership. Graduates can upgrade to graduate membership. Once they have obtained the necessary professional experience, they can progress to full membership of the IED.
