Class of Their Own

Class of Their Own have a reputation for excellence which has been refined over time. They also have a thirst for company growth and a desire to build on their successes to date.

Their strategic growth objectives relied on understanding and developing competitive advantages, clear branding, and a solid communications strategy, but some knowledge gaps were recognised.

Class of their Own is an OFSTED-approved provider of after-school clubs and holiday clubs.

They currently run 13 after-school clubs and five holiday clubs in Brighton and Hove, making them the second largest provider in the UK.

Strategic business and marketing expertise

A two year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project was created to develop and embed strategic business and marketing expertise to expand the business into new geographical areas with demand for out of school care. The project also included evaluation and the subsequent development of new out of school care services.

To embed new capabilities within the company, Class of Their Own wanted to work with the University of Brighton Business School so that they could access its renowned expertise in:

  • Research and analysis expertise in franchising and alternative business expansion models
  • Strategic marketing
  • Marketing communications and social marketing

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership is an extraordinary scheme which helps businesses to increase profitability by linking with a University Academic team.

Our two-year strategic marketing project helped us to develop our business in ways we could never have foreseen.

The on-going support of an academic team combined with an enthusiastic graduate has aided us in the development of a strategic plan that is the blueprint of our company operations for the next six years.

Our management team now has strategic growth knowledge embedded - I can’t imagine any other way we could have developed such a strong strategic plan. We are already looking for a second project!

The project (2014-2016)

Under supervision of the academic team from the University of Brighton Business School and Class of Their Owns strategic team, the KTP Associate researched opportunities for the company to expand in new geographical areas.

Research and expertise from the University of Brighton’s academic team informed the KTP Associates development of a business growth strategy including a variety of costing and franchise options.

As associated implementation plan was also created alongside segmented marketing and communication approaches, which were designed and rolled out towards the end of the project and which continued post-project, as part of its legacy.

This KTP aimed to conduct in-depth research to feed the development and embedding of business and marketing expertise as part of a broader growth strategy. As part of this, franchise options were identified and implemented, rolling out Class of Their Own across broader geographic areas, securing their position as a leader in the market.

The on-going support of an academic team combined with an enthusiastic graduate has aided us in the development of a strategic plan that is the blueprint of our company operations for the next six years.

Outcomes

  • Strategic planning and marketing expertise is now embedded within the organisation for them to continue to develop future strategies
  • Market research expertise has been embedded into the company and subsequently used to uncover customer motivations, which was built into the new business strategy.
  • A new capability to efficiently collect, analyse and interpret a range of data has been embedded within Class of Their Own.
  • Customer data was then analysed and collated into a sector database. There is scope to market the database to organisations who sell to schools.
  • Management, marketing and training documents were developed with staff, as a lasting legacy.
