Questions about when to apply to university

If you're planning to apply for university or college in the UK for 2023 entry, it's crucial to be aware of the UCAS deadlines. UCAS, or Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, is the central organization that manages applications to most undergraduate courses at UK universities and colleges. Let's learn when you should apply, outline the key dates, application requirements, and other important information.

  • The general application deadline is 25 January. It's essential to make a note of the specific deadline for the university and course you're interested in and apply well in advance to increase your chances of admission. We recommend starting your research and considering universities and courses at least a year before the application deadline.

The main UCAS cycle closed on 30 June 2023. However, from 5 July 2023 you can apply through Clearing for a place to start a course this autumn. Universities consider applications in Clearing for courses which still have places for September. Check course pages and UCAS for details of which courses are open in Clearing.

  • Here are the key dates for UCAS applications in 2023:

    • May 2022: UCAS application process opens for 2023 entry
    • 25 January 2023: Deadline for all other UCAS undergraduate courses (except art and design courses, which typically have a later deadline).
    • 4 July 2023: Deadline for applications through UCAS Extra.
    • 5 July 2023: Clearing opens
    • 12 July 2023: Deadline for universities and colleges to respond to your application. After this date, you will automatically be entered into Clearing.
    • 17 August 2023: Results day for A-level and BTEC exams
    • 17 October 2023: The last date to add Clearing choices for courses starting in 2023 - – universities will also have their own “latest start date” for enrolling on a course
  • Even if the UCAS deadline for undergraduate courses has passed, you can still apply through UCAS Clearing if you have your exam results. This scheme begins in early July, and if you have not received any offers or declined all your offers, you may be eligible for Clearing.

You can contact universities directly to enquire about which courses have places in Clearing. If you call a university and tell them your exam results, they may be able to make you a provisional verbal offer straight away.

Remember, international students can apply through UCAS for 2023 entry until 30 June 2023. However, you are advised to apply as early as possible due to visa requirements and it is important to check university deadlines for international students.

Finally, you can make up to five choices on your UCAS application. This can be a combination of different courses, universities, or both. If you miss the UCAS application deadline, you may still be able to apply through UCAS Clearing if you have no offers. You can also contact universities directly to inquire about applying. However, it's important to note that late applications may be less competitive and have fewer available places.
