Public health

Public health is about helping people to stay healthy and protecting them from threats to their health. It can relate to individuals or with wider populations such as a country or a specific age-group.

Our courses will develop your knowledge in areas such as differing health needs, what influences health and wellbeing, preventing ill-health and promoting health.

A global perspective

A Brighton you’ll develop understanding of public health in a globalised world. You’ll consider current global health issues and challenges, and influencing factors drawing on cultural, globalization, sustainability and ecological public health perspectives. And you’ll investigate influences such as UN organisations, NGOs, trade policies and politics and economics.

At Brighton you’ll have access to a wide range of specialist facilities during your studies such as skills and simulation suites, a nutrition suite and research suite with the latest technology. Our library service offers thousands of public-health related publications and are open seven days a week.

Association for Nutrition

Our Nutrition with Public Health BSc(Hons) is accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AfN).

The Association for Nutrition (AfN) protects and benefits the public by defining and advancing standards of evidence-based practice across the field of nutrition and at all levels within the workforce.

AfN Programme Accreditation is a quality mark awarded to degree programmes which meet the high standards required by the AfN.

Graduates of an AfN Accredited Programmes are eligible to apply via Direct Entry for UKVRN registration as a Registered Associate Nutritionist (ANutr).

What jobs can I do with a public health-related degree? 

There are many jobs you could enter with a public health-related degree - working in public health practice in the public, not-for-profit, voluntary or commercial sector.

Jobs you could do include:

  • local public health programme coordinator or commissioner
  • health project coordinators for voluntary sector organisations
  • health promotion specialist
  • aid or development worker
  • education officer
  • young peoples’ welfare or sexual health advisers in a college or primary prevention setting
  • nutritional therapist
  • food technologist.
