How did you travel to university today?
By weighing up your options and making use of your student discount, you may be able to save money on your transport costs.
Student keycard and mobile app tickets can be bought online:
7 day Network saver scratchcard tickets are available from some campus shops.
Monthly, three-monthly and annual student savers are also available. For all your options, including how to get a smartcard that lets you buy your tickets online, see the Brighton & Hove Buses student portal.
Full-time students and anyone aged 16-25 can save up to one third on train travel across Britain with the 16–25 Railcard. You can apply for a railcard at a train station or online. Santander offer a four year 16-25 railcard free with their 1|2|3 Student Current Account.
The Unizone ticket is a Southern Rail season ticket for students travelling in the Brighton, Eastbourne or Worthing areas.
To purchase a Unizone ticket, you need a 16-25 railcard and a TOTUM/NUS card. You must buy Unizone tickets at one of the staffed stations within the Unizone area. You cannot buy these tickets online, on the train or at the machines. Make sure you have a TOTUM/NUS card and a rail photo identity card. Keep the receipt safe in case the ticket is mislaid.
You can also save money if you book your rail travel in advance and online. Visit the Southern Railway website to book local trips in advance (eg trips to London).
For journeys further afield, check national rail companies such as Virgin Trains, Great Western Railway for their best prices, or visit the National Rail website or thetrainline.com.
Many rail companies release cheap tickets up to 13 weeks before the travel date, so the earlier you book, the more you can save.
Full-time students and anyone aged 16-25 can save up to one third on coach fares across Britain with the National Express Young Persons Coachcard.
You can also search for low fares and book in advance to save money. Visit the National Express website to do so.
