“I had worked in a school for approximately 16 years, in various roles from teaching assistant to inclusion mentor. The Postgraduate Teacher Apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to receive a salary. This was a perfect route for me as, being a mature student, I needed to get a monthly wage.
“Attending university one day a week was great. The university days were informative and enjoyable. Subject tutors provided us with fun sessions which allowed us to question and challenge our perspectives and increase our knowledge. I researched ideas and theories related to education which I was then able to apply in school and put into everyday practice.
“All the university tutors were supportive and always willing to answer any questions. They were all enthusiastic and approachable and provided me and the other apprentices with the space and opportunity to think and discuss educational theories and ideas and reflect on our practice.
“My workplace mentor was an invaluable aspect of the course. They were there to support and answer any questions I had; they observed me teaching regularly and provided me with helpful feedback to improve my practice. They were also there to ensure my workload was not too unmanageable and that my wellbeing was good.
“The apprentices I was with came from all walks of life with different experiences of working in schools. What I enjoyed most was the opportunity to be with other apprentices and just to talk to them, to compare what we had been doing and learning, to be supportive of each other and bounce ideas and get advice from them.
“I enjoyed everything about being a teacher apprentice, even the assignments (although I didn’t feel it at the time!).
“Since finishing the apprenticeship course, I applied and got a job in the school I completed my apprenticeship in. I am now a teacher of a year 3 class.”
