Join us for study, work or visit

The University of Brighton's Centre for Spatial and Social Justice welcomes contact with prospective student or academic members, independent researchers and representatives of organisations and institutions that engage with political issues across our academic themes.

Study for your PhD with the Centre for Spatial and Social Justice

Ambitious and talented postgraduate research students are at the heart of the research and enterprise activities within the Centre for Spatial and Social Justice.

Our postgraduate student members are involved across all research areas of the centre and benefit from expert supervision from both the centre and wider university. We have also helped candidates successfully apply for funding, including the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Programme and the AHRC Landscape South Hub.

Join us for a PhD where your research is a move towards spatial and social justice.

The centre provides a welcoming and supportive environment for a range of PhD projects. As a postgraduate member, you will not only have expert supervision but you will be engaging and networking with dozens of like-minded people from academia and beyond.

Discover more about the work of our academic supervisors on our Who we are pages and explore the potential of a PhD in your discipline by searching the university's relevant programme areas for research study:

PhD programme disciplines at the University of Brighton

Our staff and postgraduate student members of the Centre for Spatial and Social Justice support and conduct PhD projects across multiple disciplines with a shared interest in the in/justice that can be recognised, analysed and served through their research.

Some of the academic areas our staff and students relate to are indicated below, but we are interested in suitable, well-formed proposals that touch on several areas in transdisciplinary or multidisciplinary work, or which bring new experimental methodologies to the research questions that the centre is focused on.

  • Architecture PhD
  • Criminology PhD
  • Design PhD and Arts and creative practices PhD
  • Politics PhD
  • Psychology PhD
  • Sexuality and gender studies PhD
  • Sociology PhD
  • Sport and leisure studies PhD

The university's PhD programme list reflects some of the more popular disciplinary choices that staff and students identify with, but the Centre for Spatial and Social Justice will be happy to hear proposals that draw on elements across these and other disciplines, especially where traditionally discrete subject methodologies can be beneficially brought together.

Entry to research masters degrees across spatial and social justice

Our academics are also the driving force behind research masters degrees in a number of disciplines, including:

  • MRes Architectural Research
  • MRes Humanities
  • MRes Social Science

Research Masters (MRes) degrees provide a background to PhD application and also foster research skills with a wide range of applications. The range of MRes degrees offered by the University of Brighton can be found on the university course pages through the search facility.
