With almost half of UK university students commuting to campus, Brighton has launched a new package of financial support to help with the challenges they face.

Commuter students are a growing and vital part of higher education, but their experience is often marked by extra financial and personal pressures. According to the 2024 Student Money & Wellbeing Survey, students typically need an additional £621 per month to feel secure in their studies – but for those who commute, that figure rises to £782.
With over 30% of its own students commuting to campus, the University of Brighton understands that flexibility and support are key to student success and is committed to ensuring that commuting doesn’t mean compromising on education and well-being.
This is why it continues to develop targeted initiatives that alleviate the stress of student life on the go – helping commuters balance study, travel, and personal life.
At the heart of this effort is Travel Boost, a key component of the university’s Brighton Boost initiative, offering first-year commuting students up to £700 in financial aid. This year, the university expanded eligibility for the scheme, enabling more local students to benefit. Participants have highlighted its positive impact on reducing stress, easing financial burdens, and creating a healthier balance between study and personal life.
Early Childhood Education and Care BA(Hons) student, Kristina Voyce, said: “With the rising cost of petrol and the need to drive my children to school and nursery before attending university, the support from the Travel Boost has been a huge relief, helping to cover the rising fuel costs and ease some of the pressure. I’m incredibly grateful for this assistance – it’s made a real difference in balancing my responsibilities and continuing my studies.”
For many, commuting is a deliberate choice influenced by family commitments, work, cost, or environmental concerns. Ketan Srivastva studying Physical Education BA(Hons) reflected on how Brighton’s support has enhanced his commuting experience:
“With strong and reliable transport links, I could easily travel to campus while still enjoying the comfort and stability of living in a familiar environment. The support offered by the university for commuting students, such as designated spaces for studying between lectures and resources for time management, made the decision even more practical.
Additionally, commuter-specific social media groups can help you connect with peers. Commuting to Brighton... has allowed me to balance my studies with financial sustainability while maintaining a sense of independence.”
The university also provides free parking permits for students whose term-time address is over 30 miles from campus or requires more than 45 minutes of public transport. Blue badge holders, students with health issues, caregiving responsibilities, or placement requirements also qualify for free on-campus parking.
Beyond financial aid, the university offers a wide range of online resources that can be accessed from anywhere, to ensure commuting students have access to the same opportunities as their peers. These resources include:
Additionally, Brighton Students' Union organises regular online events, while many student societies offer virtual opportunities for engagement.
The university is also encouraging students to adopt greener, more affordable travel options:
These measures reflect the university’s commitment to adapting to the changing realities of student life. Whether commuting or living on campus, every student is supported to excel academically and socially.
As the university evolves and responds to modern challenges, it remains steadfast in its mission: to empower students, celebrate diversity, and pave the way for a more equitable future in higher education.
