Each lecturer is so passionate about their subject, which really helped to get me absorbed in the course. They were willing to go above and beyond to nurture our interests. For example a trip to the med school for some very hands-on anatomy lessons with cadavers to complement the topics we were covering in our classes.

Dr Sarah Pitt and Snails on her hand

Our researchers are tackling global problems leading the development of novel biomedical products and pioneering new approaches to regenerative medicine and the treatment of asthma, diabetes, cancer and other chronic diseases.

  • You will learn from experts who are internationally recognised for their applied research that makes a difference to our world.
  • Dr Sarah Pitt (pictured) has made a breakthrough in the search for new antibiotics – courtesy of the common garden snail. Researchers have suspected that snail mucus contains antibacterial properties but the University of Brighton’s Dr Sarah Pitt has conclusively identified proteins that could directly lead to the development of an antibiotic cream.

Biomedical Science students in a lab

Visiting lecturer Lindsey Dixon, Chief Biomedical Scientist at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, shares her knowledge with students

Applied learning is an important part of your studies at Brighton. You will put theory into practice using specialist equipment to develop your lab skills and techniques.

Hospital visits and lectures from visiting clinical and biomedical scientists enhance your learning experience and provide a professional context for your studies.

Professional placements in industry provide invaluable opportunities to develop new skills, build your confidence and gain vital experience.

The option of a placement year in an accredited NHS training lab allows you to work towards the IBMS Certificate of Competence and the Registration Training Portfolio.
