Estranged students

If you don’t have the same support from your family network as other students, you could be eligible for support as part of our commitment to help estranged students.

We’ve recently signed the Stand Alone Pledge. Read it here or watch the video featuring our Vice-Chancellor Professor Debra Humphris and Helen Abrahams from our Student Advice Service.

Stand alone

What does the pledge mean for you?

Guaranteed accommodation

We will guarantee a place in university-managed accommodation for your first year of study, including Christmas and Easter, providing that you firmly accept your offer of a place and apply by the accommodation deadline.

This can be extended to future years and the summer holiday, however we cannot always promise this will be in the same halls you are offered in your first year.

If you would prefer to live in private sector accommodation, we can also help you with this.

If you do accept halls, you will get a warm welcome from our Student Residential Advisers.

Find out about our different accommodation options and get in touch with the team.

Help with funding

Once Student Finance decides you are estranged from your family and you are a UK national, you are automatically treated as an independent student.

This means that you won’t have to provide them with any financial information from your parents in order to be assessed for the standard student finance package.

If you have any questions about this or you are having any difficulties accessing the right funding, please don’t hesitate to contact us for help.

You may be eligible for our Estranged Student's Bursary which is £1,000 per year. This is not a loan so you don’t have to pay this back.

We also have additional fundsto help students who may be experiencing financial difficulties, which you can apply for after your course has started.

Our Student Advisers can help you with all your budgeting and money management worries, and there's also useful advice on our Money Matters blog.

Help while you are here

A personal student support and guidance tutor will help if you are struggling with your studies or need other support.

If you are experiencing stress or difficulty in or outside of university we can help you with emotional support, counselling services and wellbeing workshops.

We provide study skills assistance – to help you with the academic demands of university. You can also access study skills sessions and online support.

You'll have access to the university mentoring programme, Momentum, which can help boost your confidence and gain extra employability skills.

What happens next?

We can support you as much or as little as you need and you can contact us for help and advice, or just to say hello, at any point in your UCAS application.

If we make you an offer

Once you enrol online you will be invited to tell us if you are estranged or a care leaver. If you tick this box, we will know to contact you soon after the start of term.

If you are eligible, and confirm that you would like additional support, your details will be passed (with your permission) to relevant teams at the university. These departments will assess your support needs and help with any queries you may have.
